Pink Floyd released their ninth studio album, Wish You Were Here, in the fall of 1975. “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” was the massive epic which both began (Parts 1-5) and ended (Parts 6-9) the album. I’ve combined both into a single video. The record explores themes of absence, the music business and former band-mate Syd Barrett’s mental decline. The album was recorded in numerous sessions at London’s Abbey Road Studios. Although some of these sessions were problematic, it was lead writer Roger Waters’ idea to split the centrepiece track “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” in two and join each half with three new compositions. “Shine On” was a tribute to Barrett, who, coincidentally, made an impromptu visit to the studio while it was being recorded. The record initially received mixed reviews, but has since been acclaimed by critics and appears on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time”. Band members Richard Wright and David Gilmour have each declared Wish You Were Here their favourite Pink Floyd album. The song is…..well, what is there to say? An epic, unadulterated, masterpiece. The Dark Side of the Moon is the eighth studio album by English progressive rock band Pink Floyd, released in March 1973. It built on ideas explored in the band’s earlier recordings and live shows, but lacks the extended instrumental excursions that characterised their work following the departure in 1968 of founder member, principal composer and lyricist, Syd Barrett. The Dark Side of the Moon’s themes include conflict, greed, the passage of time and mental illness, the latter partly inspired by Barrett’s deteriorating mental state….

“The Great Gig in the Sky” is the fifth track on The Dark Side of the Moon. The studio version features voice instrumental music by Clare Torry. The song began life as a Richard Wright chord progression, known variously as “The Mortality Sequence” or “The Religion Song”. During 1972 performances of The Dark Side of the Moon song cycle (prior to the album being recorded), it was simply an organ instrumental accompanied by spoken word samples from the Bible and snippets of speeches by Malcolm Muggeridge, a British writer known for his conservative religious views. By the time the band came to record the song for Dark Side, the lead instrument had been switched to a piano rather than an organ. Various sound effects were tried for the track, including recordings of NASA astronauts communicating on space missions, but none were satisfactory. Finally, a couple of weeks before the album was due to be finished, the band decided to try having a female singer “wail” over the music. Spoken part: “And I am not frightened of dying. Any time will do, I don’t mind. Why should I be frightened of dying?
